As there were cattle thieves, Simmons, a new rich ranger, convinced the Virginia City Cattleman's Association to hire a range detective. When the range detective didn't want to kill Ira Tatum, because he wasn't a thief, Simmons went out to kill him by himself. Outside it was dark and raining and he killed Tatum's wife instead.

He was sad over a woman who didn't want him and went with an other man, therefore he started to drink and his life was a mess. Hoss wanted to help him and played matchmaker, he wanted to match him with a widowed woman. But it seemed that wasn't a good idea, it went really bad. But it's a TV show and at the end everything turned out to be fine.
