Episode 135 - SHE WALKS IN BEAUTY

I didn't notice any comments about Ben nearly busting a blood vessel over his son's commitment to Regan. Ben comes back to the house after speaking with Adam and confronts Hoss. Ben is nearly in tears here.

It made me think of the contrasting experiences these two brothers have with women. It must have been frustrating for Hoss to constantly see his handsome brother receive so much female attention while he struggled. He even talked about how little brother Joe tried to give him tips for wooing women. On the other hand, Adam's attractiveness causes him to frequently receive unwanted advances from women and sometimes brings him into conflict with other men, including his own brothers. He also hasn't had any better luck finding true love.

En the series Adam didn't have more female attention than Hoss. They had the same, I think. Who had the most attention was Little Joe.

As I like Adam, but I think it was his fault. In the first place, why didn't he keep distance with Reagan while he was speaking to her? But no, he put his arm around her and then she started to touch him. Adam should have pushed her away, but oh no, he waited til she kissed him. Then poor Hoss came by and saw it. I think it's normal that he got mad at Adam. Maybe he shouldn't have beaten him that way, but he thought, that Adam was betraying him.

I don't hate her, I think she hadn't had a good childhood. She said, that her father always denied her and that he only loved Amelia. I think she wanted to be loved like everybody, but she did it the wrong way.

I've always seen that scene as Adam initiating and Regan following through. Regan reminds me in a number of scenes of someone who has been sexually abused and has responded to it by becoming the initiator. A lot of women who've been sexually abused will react romantically when the guy has made it clear that's what he wants, even when the woman isn't interested, because they feel they don't have the power to stop him, but "If I choose it, it won't hurt as much." I do not get the impression that Regan wants Adam, but I see her as kissing him because she knows he expects it and because she sees him as one of those guys who can only see her as something to be used. She loves Hoss because Hoss does not see her that way.

When Hoss refuses to let her discuss her past earlier in the ep, I think he isn't interested in her past because he senses that about her -- he knows she's done things with men she didn't want to do, because she doesn't understand she has a choice to say 'no,' and he doesn't want to shame her by hearing the specifics. But Hoss also thinks he can rescue her, and he can't. He thinks she'll be okay because his strength will be hers, but that just isn't how it works -- Regan has to heal before she can change. After Hoss beats up Adam, and Ben explains the situation to her, Regan knows her instinctive responses aren't going to magically change, and are going to cause all manner of trouble -- maybe get someone killed -- so she gives Hoss up.

I’ve just watched this ep and read through all the interesting threads here about the reasons behind the fight in the bunkhouse, the dynamic between the two sisters and perceived misogyny of the writing. I just can’t believe no-one has mentioned that exquisitely carved horses head outside the Miller mansion that Ben tied his horse to. Did Amelia Miller only ever expect to receive one visitor at a time? When Ben and Hoss visited for afternoon tea, where on earth did Hoss tether his horse?

Hoss probably allowed his pa to tie his horse inthe 'visitor parking' spot and he tied his horse in the flower garden so Chubb can have a snack.

For all her errors she did make an honourable decision in giving Hoss up for his sake and for the brothers relationship. She had the power over Hoss to just keep going with the marriage but she left town instead. Maybe she also realized that being more like her sister in behaviour was just not her style and she was bored with it. She had lived many years her own way. Adam was caught in the position of knowing about her and trying to protect his younger brother, not an easy spot to be in.
