I can totally understand Joe's wish to prove himself as an adult. I totally get that. I also dig that Ben is against it and rightfully so. Joe is way too young and inexperienced to take on such a position. And although he is a fast shooter, it just takes more skill in human relations to become a sheriff. I love Ben's statement that he didn't raise his sons to be gunfighters.

One more thing. Joseph, you are going to feel the pain when you reach my age when it rains or snows. Your joints are going to ache like heck.

Ben could have talked Joe out of taking the job as temporary sheriff except for Adam and Hoss snickering when they heard about it! :mad That's what big brothers are for-teasing younger brothers. Joe needed to prove himself, although it was a dangerous way to go about it. Somehow he pulled it off. :roy

But Ben was hearing Joe's pleas to be a man. And, yes, I get the taunting from the brothers. Mine taunted me enough when I was a kid. I think Joseph did a fine job.

Joe just wanted to prove that he could do and be more than just a rancher. He wanted to expand his options, to prove not just to his family, but to himself that he had what it took to be a lawman. Unfortunately for the bad guys, they didn't count on being outsmarted by a "kid." Some kid! Joe had more smarts than the rest of them.
Wait a minute, wait a minute. What you're saying is that at your age, you don't know the difference between a girl and a horse?

I love the scene where Joe intends to give the lady a poem but ends up giving her the laws for Rubicon
He is so darned cute in this ep, especially when he gives them ‘a kid’ and says he cannot go looking for Sylvie Ann, because someone stole his horse and he can’t go out looking for her at night.
Little Joe forever
