Character Names

Post by Tracy » Thu Jun 04, 2015 8:02 pm

Have you ever noticed interesting things about character names on TV westerns?

On "Gunsmoke - season 8, 1963 - The Odyssey of Jubal Tanner", Kevin Hagan plays a character named Hobie. Kevin also played Hobie on "Bonanza - season 4, 1963 - Elegy for a Hangman. So the actor played a "Hobie" twice in the same year on two different westerns.

In that same "Gunsmoke" episode, season 8, 1963 - The Odyssey of Jubal Tanner, Peter Breck plays Jubal Tanner.
Peter starred in "The Big Valley", and in season 1, 1965, "The Big Valley" has an episode with the exact title - "The Odyssey of Jubal Tanner".

I've never noticed that, Tracy. Makes me curious…where the characters by the same name in the two different shows in any way similar?

And in 1968 in "The Big Valley" we had an "Ed Tanner", PR! Cute that they used the names over and over again. I suppose he was not Jubal Tanner's brother?

Not at all similar. One Jubal Tanner was played by a very young Peter Breck and the other was played by Arthur O'Connell - much older than Breck and the characters were not at all the same.

I have noticed that many episodes from different series' have the same name but disparate plots. I haven't paid too much attention to characters' names--will have to be more attentive.

That is really interesting. I wonder how many more similarities we can find if we keep our eyes open?
