Bejules wrote:From what I've read and if my memory serves me correctly I believe the scream that was taken out was when Joe got trampled by the horses in the barn. Mike's performance all through that episode was outstanding and you can feel his pain! You can imagine Mike gave his all when he had to react to being trampled and the PTB decided that his scream was just too realistic for the audience to take!
snapdragon wrote: That's interesting. I've watched this episode a few times and noticed that ML's mouth had opened to scream when the horse stomped on his leg but I always wondered why I never heard anything? :think

Can the original scream be heard on the DVDs? Or anywhere?
Well I have the German DVDs and I can't detect a hint of his scream at all!

In this episode we learn that Joe likes the cooler weather. That, and according to Hoss, he'll do anything to get out of a round up. What I like best is the in-depth tour of the barn and kitchen. Good Ol' Joe knows where all the liquor is kept. I also enjoy this later style of more realistic photography. Anytime they are off the sound stage is alright with me. The title puts me off as does the suffering Joe. Personally, I prefer more action and less drama, however, nobody does it better than ML.

This one brings to mind a LHOP episode when Carolyn is hurt by a rusty nail. I wonder if he recycled the script.

I read somewhere that he did. I'm not sure what site it was, I can't remember, but I do know that it said he had gotten permission from the producers of Bonanza to re-create it for LHOTP.

There are several moments in this episode that I find deeply touching. The first is when Joe buries his face in Cochise's mane and cries. His horse is the one friend to whom he can go for comfort now. The second is when he smiles a little and says, "Wait 'til Hop Sing sees his kitchen!" The third is when he decides about the amputation; his expression changes and you can see in his eyes that he's made up his mind. Terrifying. The fourth moment is at the end of the episode, when Pa and Hoss are there and Joe is just snuggling down into his blankets with a big smile on his face. No need for him to talk. Everything's going to be all right now.

I loved all those moments, but my ultimate favorite, like you said, Cowgirl. That reassuring smile at the end is priceless. Joe knew he was in good hands, now that his family was home.

I love this episode. It is so well done. After reading about the scream on the boards here I pulled out my DVD. Alas there is no scream on the German release.

Wow! That's an intense episode to see for your first Bonanza episode.
