Was Hoyt Axton considered to be one of Bonanza's 'superstar' guest stars?

This episode was one long musical number. Not that I minded, I very much enjoyed Axton's singing and his duets with Roberts. However, his acting leaves much to be desired.

This was Pernell's last Bonanza episode shown. For that reason (though Adam is not my favorite character), it's a sad episode.

It's not the best episode but enjoyable. I do love the guitar sing along between Pernell and Hoyt. I always fast forward the Early One Morning rendition that Hilda does.

I agree, it's a sad episode as it's the last time we see Pernell in Bonanza. [Big sigh].

I think I watch the clip when they are singing Endless Road at least once a day.

Shame about the massive continuity error at the beginning of the ep where Adam rides up coatless but thrusts a gun in Hoyt's face with coat...

The music is great. The fact that it's the last episode for PR always makes me sad. One thing that's always bothered me about this one has to do with Hilda. She directly abetted Howard in his escape from jail, yet in the final scene she's heading out, apparently to join family in Germany, and there's no indication that she suffered any legal consequences for her action. The sheriff was even helping her with the sale of her property! I've never quite understood that.

I hadn't realized before this was Pernell's last episode. I think it's possible I didn't want to know which one that actually was, but I'll try and be a big girl about it now.

I loved the music in this one, too. I thought I had also always noticed Pernell came across a little differently on screen in this one as well - wasn't sure why. Maybe it can be at least partly attributed to his enjoyment of the music. :thumbup

I guess they both enjoyed the music, Hoyt and Pernell, and PR probably was glad to be "free" at last after this episode. 20 years later Hoyt was a guest star in TJMD. Must have been fun for them to meet again!
In the sixties and seventies there were a lot of singers (even in our parts) doing films and half of them should better have sticked to their own craft instead of trying to do some acting .

Although it is Pernell's last episode, it is a favourite of mine, because he really seems to enjoy being with Hoyt and singing and playing with him.
The scene when he is fighting Howard, first with and then without his coat, is funny.
But the rest of the episode is a good example of a Cartwright sticking up for someone who seems like the underdog, even if Adam's faith turns out to be misplaced.
The brother gives me the creeps and appears to have more than just a brotherly affection for Hilda. He acts like a jealous suitor when Howard wants to take her out and calls her worthless and plain, not very nice.
But, having said that, he didn't deserve to die. Howard was just no good, but he did sing well LOL

I always notice the last shots after Adam puts Hilda on the stage. It seems as though Adam just races away rather than hanging around to give a final wave as the stage leave as he usually did. He seems to hurry back to the wagon and make a getaway. Wonder now if we were seeing Pernell making HIS getaway.
