I'm thinking these words I put together for an Adam tribute were just as appropriate here.
The Ride

Down Goat Springs way, one lazy day.
In the sun, two men dozed unaware.
Coffee supped, they palmed their cups.
Both rocked back on a wooden chair.

In the blink of an eye, beneath a clear blue sky.
An old man's life was swept away.
The younger man he made a stand!
He vowed to have his say.

There were many that scoffed in disbelief.
But, this young man he stood firm.
And even against the tide of the law,
From his principles, he wouldn't squirm.

“You're a stubborn cuss!” “Back off!"
"Cartwright, you've got it all wrong!”
This man glared with an eye, wherein,
A flint burned hard and strong.

Determined to prove his point.
He had to stand his ground.
The animals he finally chose,
They were fleet of foot and sound.

Folk thought it was impossible.
The man in black,
He pushed such thoughts aside.
With his brothers covering his back.

Adam Cartwright took The Ride!

Wait a minute, wait a minute. What you're saying is that at your age, you don't know the difference between a girl and a horse?

This episode is my favorite. Pernell does a great job. But when Roy is talking to him in his office I cannot decipher some of the words he is saying.
I wish I had the script.

I think the thing I like best is that as hard as he has to work to prove he isn't lying, Adam knows he has to do that work, and he does it. It's almost the definition of being a Cartwright.

This is one of my favorite episodes. I love seeing stubborn Adam stand on his convictions. Thinking he can prove Bill's guilt by making the ride fast enough is quite illogical, of course...I like to imagine that it's more psychologically motivated, going after Bill till he slips up and makes a damaging confession. But there are so many things to like about this episode. Adam and Bill in the saloon and Adam and Ben by the fireplace are two of my favorite scenes in all Bonanza.
That said, Roy Coffee's ability to be hoodwinked flabbergasts me. It's amazing to me that he's known the Cartwrights so well for so long, yet assumes they're guilty so quickly whenever some random person makes an accusation.
Maybe Mary reminds him of his own wife Mary...? :shrug

There is much to be appreciated about The Ride. Watching Adam face down pressure from virtually everyone is always worth watching again to me.

Most men would capitalize on the scene in which the wife (was her name Mary?) tried to convince Adam to be quiet. He recognized what was happening and became more certain as a result of his own instincts. Those scenes are an excellent representation of Adam in my mind. :adam

Although Adam never kisses Mary, you can feel the sexual tension in the scene with her . The touching of his lips with her fingers is a very sensual moment. It is a very telling moment when he gently pushes her away with the back of his hand instead of using his fingers or both hands.

Adam should practice that more often. It could save him a world of trouble!

Didn’t he get accused anyway? And Roy believed her! :lol
