I love this episode because of the brotherly banter at the dinner table and during construction of the mill. Plus, as others have mentioned, Claude Akins was deliciously nasty. I do like a good villain.

However, there are some WTFs in this episode. Joyce describes to Ben waking to her husband bending over her with a carving knife in his hand, and Ben's response is "surely you knew he meant no harm." Come ON, Ben! Then of course Ben even considering having an affair with a married woman was so out of character for Ben. I could accept it for Adam or Joe, and maybe even Hoss, but not Ben!

This is probably one of my favorite 'all Cartwrights' episodes. It so much illustrates their good Samaritan nature and the way all the boys pull together for the greater good. Great shots too of working manly men - sweaty, dirty and 'hot'! I usually go for the dramas, but this one just had a special charm.

Ezekiel is so creepy I've never enjoyed this episode. I guess it speaks well for Claude Akins as an actor, but I couldn't enjoy him in anything after seeing him in that role even when he was in a different show like Murder She Wrote. It was like seeing Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. That movie gave me nightmares, and I couldn't stand any movie she was in after that.

I was sorry things didn't work out for Ben and Joyce. I thought they should have married. I thought the episode would have been better if Tom and Ezekiel had killed each other and Joyce had married Ben.

I could have got behind that. I cannot get behind Ben committing adultery. That behavior is out of character.

I agree that it was out of character for Ben. I know I sound judgemental, but there's a level of selfishness behind adultery that I never saw as a part of Ben's character - maybe Joe's because he was young and knew he was handsome. Of course, Ben may have seen it as a sort of rescue for Joyce.

Sometimes falling in love is something we don't always have control over.
I thought this episode was an intelligent dramatization of Victorian morals and ensuing conflicts. Adam's reference to the possibility of Ben having an affair was very much in character for Adam by displaying his intelligence, sensitivity and love for his father. He was both mindful of the moral issues and considerate of his father's feelings.

But you DO have control over what you do about it. Ben could still help Joyce by sending one of his sons, such as Adam, to handle the situation. If Joyce was falling for Ben, she would understand. If she were a woman of honor, she would agree.
Of course, then we wouldn't have had an episode.

I really like this episode with them all working together. I agree it seemed like Ben was in love with her before but I hate that she just leaves. I do wish that they had been allowed to marry or at least had a steady relationship.

I find that Ben kissing her was completely out of his character! (And that bothered me.) He never approved of anyone, including his boys, being in a relationship with another Man's Wife. He had said so on many occasions!
And Joe, in following the morals he was taught by Pa, in the Episode "Emily" (Season 10, Episode 25) would have nothing to do with being in a relationship with Emily, once he found out she was married. Even though she asked him to. And you could tell he was in love with her before he found out she was married.
So, even though I love this episode (especially when the Brothers are working together on the Mill), that part of it does not sit well with me. As that is not the Pa we all know & love!
