I was around in existence somewhere, but I think my parents got a tv when I was 4yrs old. I rarely watched tv the. My earliest memories of Bonanza are early 60's when I was 6 or 7. I noticed Joe and his pinto right away! Rose For Lotta wouldn't have made the show popular. It was poorly done, but now it's an episode I love watching! Once the actors were more established it was hard to take your eyes from the screen. They had a huge impact on millions of people.

They did have a little trouble getting going, but once they clicked as a cast, they collectively turned into something pretty special. Eventually they all found their footing, and they really did develop a handle on TV of the time. I agree - it was hard to not watch after awhile; they just seemed to get better and better.

I think you have to consider the impact of the show being filmed in color, too. That was not common then, and the difference was striking. Once that burning map burst onto the scene in color with the cowboys riding up inside of it (something new and different), it was hard not to watch. :thumbup

I was around then but I don't think the family came across as that nice to start with. The exchange between Adam and Joe throwing insults at each other about their mothers didn't fit in with the characters that developed by the end of the first series. There were definite growing pains. I didn't like Ben at all at the beginning as I thought he was a bit of a bully and full of his own importance. That view didn't last long. I remember my first impression of Bonanza was favourable as they were very cute cowboys in it and I was just reaching the age when you notice things like that. Call me shallow. I was hooked.

ARFL honestly makes me cringe. The characters were all so overblown! "Feast thine eyes..." :laughing

A lot of the episode was overblown, IMO, but honestly, I like the line you've mentioned. I felt that way the first time I looked at Tahoe from way up on one of the trails.
