The Monroes 1966 - 1967

"The Monroes" was a Western television series which originally aired on ABC during the 1966–67 season.

The series centered on five orphans trying to survive as a family on the frontier in the area around what is now Grand Teton National Park near Jackson, Wyoming. Their parents die in an accident in the first episode, and they try to carry on without them.

The series starred Michael Anderson, Jr. as Clay Monroe, an 18 year old who finds himself
responsible for his younger sisters and brothers.

The eldest Monroe sister was played by Barbara Hershey (Kathy Monroe, age 16).

Clay also took responsibility for his six-year-old sister, Amy (Tammy Locke) and
his twelve-year-old brothers, twins Jefferson (Keith Shultz) and Fennimore (Kevin Shultz).

Rounding out the cast were several recurring characters.

Actor Ron Soble played Dirty Jim, a friendly hand to the Monroe orphans.

Liam Sullivan played recurring character Major Mapoy, a neighbor of the newly settled Monroes.

Bonanza favorite guest star Ben Johnson starred as Sleeve in 14 episodes.

And James Westmoreland played Ruel Jackson in twelve episodes.

"The Monroes" premiered at 8 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, September 7, 1966.

Though it benefited from the lead-in of ABC’s popular Batman series, "The Monroes" faced stiff competition against the last hour of NBC’s "The Virginian" and CBS’s second half of "Lost in Space" and "The Beverly Hillbillies".

The series did not want for popular guest stars of the era – James Brolin, Buck Taylor, Dub Taylor, John Dehner, Robert Lansing Jeanne Cooper, John Doucette, Bing Russell, James Stacy, Ron Howard, Ray Teal, Claude Akins, Dan Duryea, Morgan Woodward, James Whitmore,
Robert Fuller . . . all guest starred on the short-lived series.

Although not a ratings success, Michael Anderson, Jr. and Barbara Hershey both won American Heritage Awards for their work on the series.

I remember The Monroes! They had quite a few popular guest stars. It was a good show but couldn't stand up to competitors on other networks. :very happy

I have that DVD set. My aunt found the whole series for $9.99 at Giant Tiger. The episodes were terrific!

I was 11 when this show first aired. I usually only saw the second half of the episode because I was watching Lost in Space. I never have seen it in syndication. I may have seen a few whole episodes during Summer reruns. I never understood why they took it off the air.

I remember and liked to watch The Monroes.

I was also disappointed when the show was cancelled. It seemed like it didn't last very long.

This series also ran on German television in 1970. But as far as I know, we only saw 11 episodes of the series.

Tracy, thanks for the description and the great pictures!
