Lancer 1968 - 1970

Post by Tracy » Fri Oct 25, 2019 10:55 am

Lancer is an American Western series that aired on CBS from September 24, 1968 to June 23, 1970.

The series explored the story of a rancher who, with the help of his two sons and his ward,
struggled to hang onto his vast holdings in California's San Joaquin Valley.

The series starred Andrew Duggan as the less than admirable Murdoch Lancer,
he patriarch of the Lancer family.

The half-brother sons, Scott (Wayne Maunder) and Johnny (James Stacy),
bear some similarities to the three half-brothers of Bonanza.

Scott, whose mother died in childbirth, is Murdoch Lancer's older son.
He was raised by his maternal grandfather in Boston.

Younger son Johnny was taken from his father by his Mexican mother when he was only two.
He grew up around the Mexican border and went by the name "Johnny Madrid", under which he
earned a deserved reputation as a fast gun.

Teresa O'Brien (Elizabeth Baur), daughter of Murdoch's murdered ranch foreman,
was Murdoch's ward and a surrogate sister to the two boys.

Paul Brinegar also appeared as Jelly Hoskins, a series regular from season two after
making a one off guest appearance during the first season.

Trivia:
Plagued by rustlers and land pirates in the first episode, Murdoch Lancer had only the help of his and a few ranch hands. So, Murdoch sought out his two estranged sons whom he’d not seen since they were boys. He offered each son one-third of Lancer to help him fight off the land pirates. The diverse sons, who’d never met, motivated some excellent plotlines as they struggled to understand one another and their cultural differences and work together with a father they also had to learn to appreciate.

One of the great surprises of the 2019 movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” was that Quentin Tarantino got to “make his third western” (following “Django Unchained” and “The Hateful Eight”) with his retro-contemporary redo of the actual ’60s TV series “Lancer.” In the movie, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a somewhat washed-up actor, who appears as a guest star on “Lancer”.

I loved this show and have many episodes sitting in my DVD list. It's also on HANDI TV Sunday afternoons. I had the biggest crush on James Stacy, Johnny Lancer. I even did a two-week POD in this forum a few years ago.

Unfortunately, it came on the air at a time when westerns were losing popularity.

For anyone who gets MeTV, they play a Lancer episode every Sunday at 2pm Eastern time. They are currently on "The Black Angel (Season 2, episode 4).

It's not METV -- it's HandI TV -- Heroes and Icons. It's easy to get them confused.

I remember seeing a few episodes ,since I had to go to school the next morning I missed quite a few. It wasn’t on long. Love the theme song. I liked this series better than High Chaparral . Pernell guest stars in one of the episodes.
