He has the gentle look of Chubb. I also read that Matt rode Buck for some time. Those horses got around.

I was always given to understand that the original "Cochise" who had to be destroyed after a vicious attack was called "Tomahawk"! So did both horses have the same name?

This page: http://petticoatsandpistols.com/2011/04 ... f-bonanza/ says that the original Cochise was named Tomahawk. The author admits she didn't find much information on Chub. Of course, she may have been mistaken.

But this page http://www.tvacres.com/horses_catrwright.htm also mentions Tomahawk as the real name for Joe's horse. Maybe...
Each of the family's four members rode a different horse.

Little Joe (Michael Landon) the youngest members rode Cochise, a black and white pinto piebald (also Paint)
Eric "Hoss" Cartwright (Dan Blocker) rode a horse called Chubb (also Ginger & Paiute);
Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts), the eldest son rode a gelding named Sport (also Beauty)
Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene), the patriarch of these fine boys rode a buckskin gelding named Buck.

The horses real names were Tomahawk, Dunny Waggoner, Slippers and Streak. They were sold in 1969 for approximately $19,000.
(bolding is mine)

One would think that the order of the horses' Bonanza names would match the order of the list of real names. But I have a hard time believing that Chubs' real name was "Dunny Waggoner", since Ben's horse was the dun.

There is a lot of conflicting information about the Bonanza horses - just like the human actors! For instance, I've seen stories saying James Arness also rode Buck on "Gunsmoke", then reading someone else saying that's a false rumor.

I know that Buck/Dunny Wagoneer is a movie that has Ben Jones in it called The Stallion (I think that's what it's called) and you can definitely tell that it is him. So our horsies were stars of other things as well. It's precious!
