Is this Chubb?

Post by Freya » Tue Sep 02, 2014 4:42 am

I saw an episode of Gunsmoke the other day (Brush at Elkader). Matt and Chester had travelled to Elkader on the trail of a criminal. Matt wasn't on his usual horse but on this one:

Like Chubb, the horse had three white socks.

Here is Chubb in 'A Man to Admire.' What do you think?

It's more than just the markings, isn't it. It's virtually the same expression. Good catch Freya.

It would be hard to find 2 horses with the stripe being that close! I can't see the socks to compare, but markings are pretty tell tale. James Arness was taller too, so he'd be a good size for him. You are very alert!

Filmed in the spring of 1956, this "Gunsmoke" episode indeed seems to include Dan Blocker's famous mount (whose "real" name, incidentally, was "Tomahawk;" take a look at his distinctive markings to see why he got that moniker). Legendary Hollywood horseman Clarence "Fat" Jones supplied mounts to virtually every western made from 1912 until his death in 1963 (including BONANZA and "Gunsmoke") and his family kept the business going through the 1970s.

wow, Chubb before fame! Checked out IMDB and that episode was season 2 # 2 in 1956. "Fats" Jones must have felt the Gunsmoke horses were the best! Did I not read that Ben's Buck was originally Matt's horse?

Good eye! That combo of star and strip is pretty distinctive-hard to imagine it wouldn't be Chubb.

It's gotta be Chub! :yes

I did a bio on Chub a while back.

Freya, would you mind if I added your cap and commentary to the Chub bio?

The blaze is identical. Either Chubb or his twin.
