Maverick star James Garner dead at 86

Post by January » Sun Jul 20, 2014 1:05 pm

Image TV and film star James Garner, who is remembered for dramas “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files” on the small screen, died yesterday of natural causes. He was 86 and had suffered ill health since a severe stroke in 2008.

Born as James Burngarner on April 7, 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, Garner got an early start on the small screen in episodes of “Zane Grey Theater, “Conflict,” “Cheyenne” and “Sugarfoot,” among others, in the 1950s. He debuted on his first hit series, “Maverick,” in 1957, which resulted in his first of 14 Emmy Award nominations. And “The Rockford Files,” his second hit series, enjoyed a six-season run beginning in 1974 (which resulted in his first of two Emmy wins). In between “Maverick” (which was briefly revived as “Bret Maverick” in the 1981-82 season), Garner appeared in over one dozen theatricals including “The Great Escape” in 1963, “Grand Prix” in 1966 and “Support Your Local Sheriff!” in 1969. His one Oscar nomination came for “Murphy’s Romance” opposite Sally Field in 1985. And he appeared opposite Doris Day in 1963 screwball comedy “Move over Darling,” and Julie Andrews in gender-bending comedy “Victor Victoria” in 1982.

Garner also headlined short-lived TV series “Nichols” in 1971-72, “Man of the People” in 1991-92 and “First Monday” in 2002, and joined the cast of ABC sitcom “8 Simple Rules For Dating Your Teenage Daughter” in 2003 following the tragic passing of John Ritter. TV movies include “My Name Is Bill W” in 1989 and “Barbarians at the Gate” in 1993. More recent films included “Space Cowboys” in 2000 and “The Notebook” in 2004.

Garner married his wife, the TV actress Lois Clarke, in 1957. They had two daughters, Kimberly from her previous marriage, and their daughter Greta.

Leave your front door and your back door open. Allow your thoughts to come and go. Just don't serve them tea.

One of the best! He has been missed since he became ill, and will forever be "Maverick" to me.
