Richard Boone's Stunt double, Hal Needham, dies

Post by Adamant » Sat Oct 26, 2013 12:40 pm

Hal Needham (1931-2013) who began his career in the stunt business by being Richard Boone's stunt double on Have Gun, Will Travel, has died. Most people are familiar with him due to his close association with Burt Reynolds and the movies, Smoky and the Bandit and Cannonball Run.

Over the years, he broke 56 bones--his back, twice.

I went and had a look at his IMDB file and just cannot believe that this man was still doing stunts in '96. What an impressive resume. I know he will be missed.

Stuntmen and women work very hard and risk a lot. I salute them!

His career is amazing, won awards three for the worst director and one for worst screenplay, but apart from stunt work his movies made money, he replied to his critics by showing himself with a wheelbarrow full of money, he also designed props and gadgets to make the stunt industry safer which got him Scientific and Engineering Award, and was at one time the highest paid stuntman in the business....a film, in which he appears, is being released in 2014 'Confessions of a Hollywood Stuntman'

l didn't realise how many episodes of 'Have Gun Will Travel' there were, apart from BZ it was one of my favs.

:RIP Mr Needham you truly deserve it.

Here is a great interview with Hal Needham by Terry Gross on NPR's "Fresh Air". This is from February 2011

Thanks, ellen. I finally got around to reading it. We always think that stuntmen don't really get hurt but Needham showed otherwise. It makes you appreciate all of them even more.
