Previously to Bonanza, Tim played Mike Beardsley in Yours Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda

We meet Griff in a Season 14 episode called THE RIOT

Ben as a favor to the Governor visits a Nevada prison for an inspection. He is shocked by the conditions. The prisoners take him captive in the hopes of improving conditions. Griff is one of the prisoners who try to help Ben and keep him safe. Griff realizes that Ben is influential and can actually help them. Candy and Joe come to the rescue to free Ben.

Ben sees a soul in Griff who needs rescuing and agrees to become his guardian of sorts and takes him home to work and live.
