Joe and Adam with their supply wagons are accompanying a judge and his wife from the town of Silver Hills to Virginia City.
The episode begins with Lila Conrad, a saloon girl, killing a man in self defense.
In an early scene the judge chastises Joe about the saloons and the people in them. Adam politely tells the judge that he doesn't need to worry about his brother. He also says that they will get along better if they take the Cartwrights as they find them.
Later Joe finds Lila hiding in the back of one of the wagons. He promises to protect her. Adam is not pleased when Joe finally tells him about Lila.
There are some nice Joe and Adam moments throughout the episode. They are a united front in protecting Lila and trying to help her get to Virginia City where she'll have justice. The judge does not help matters, and neither does the Silver HIlls sheriff and his men.
There's a scene where Joe reasons with Lila and tries to encourage her to continue on to Virginia City where she will have a fair chance.
The story ends with Lila finally realizing that going on to Virginia City is the best thing for her. Adam tells her they will get her a lawyer as soon as they get there. Joe tells her she'll have a fair trial, and now she has nothing to be afraid of.
